Was hesitant to call Linksys for help setting this up but I got right thru and talked to someone who actually spoke English and got both computers set up in less than 15 minutes. I don't think I could have done it myself so glad I called their support.
It's been a year since I use it as an access point. I have never had any problem with it.In conclusion, if you are considering wireless G, I strongly recommend this product as a router and access point for its reliability and versatility. With little internet research, I found out that I could use WRT54GS as a wireless access point with firmware update. So I first thought about selling this old router on ebay or something, and then buying new N router and access point that might cost around $200-300. So I won't bother telling you how good it was as a router. As a access point:But last year when I moved to new house, I needed to widen my network signal range for the house. As a router:I bought this product five years ago to access internet in several devices at home as this one had best reviews among routers in Amazon.com. And an access point was also necessary for my internet phone and desktop computer that are located separately from my router (due to strange cable setup in my house) and that require wired connection to AP. After buying D-Link DIR-655 N router, an hour of updating firmware and setting the access point, there was $100 perfect and new network system for my house.
I am going to call Amazon to see if they can refund me some money or otherwise I am trashing.I have made a vow never to use linksys products again. The new one also didn't work that good. I called amazon and got it replaced. After that it has never worked. Linksys is a respected company and I have used their products before but I dont know why and how they managed to come up with such a aweful product.I purchased one 4 months back. It kept on going dead and I had to restart it almost every 30 min. And finally one day it went dead and I pressed the reset button located at the back.
Very easy to set up. Highly recommended. This router works great. My home network was online in about 10 minutes.
Over the past few weeks though it seemed I'd lose connection to the Internet. I DRILLED her like HUNTING FOR OIL. THEN THE TABLES TURNED/THE WORLD I ONLY SAW in the movie "THE RAINMAKER" CAME CRASHING DOWN ON ME "IS THE COMPANY FAILING TO INFORM THE CONSUMERS OF THIS "VERY SIMPLE, VERY COST EFFECTIVE METHOD of Replacing ""their/the warehouse they received mine at least." FAULTY CORD. Thanks.04-23-2008 07:54 PM I found the CORRUPT posted by this COSTUMER, reminding not the TECH SUPPORT. Install, easy enough. JUST TRYING TO GET AN ANSWER TO WHY THE TECH SUPPORT NEVER ONCE CLUE/HIND or EVEN TOLD ME that IT COULD be the ETHERNET CORD.
I think the cable they provide is less then quality. NOW, I"M THINKING ARE THEY SWEEPING THIS ISSUE UNDER A DIRTY RUG. Then, they CLAIM the device was defective and gave me REPLACEMENT request/claim number. UNTIL, SHE SAID "I, MIGHT GET FIRED OVER THIS" {I"M THINKING WHY.} I FOUND OUT THIS REPRESENTATIVE IS OVERSEAS SO I THOUGHT THERE MIGHT BE "DIFFERENT LAWS GOVERNING HER RESPONSES AND SUCH. YEA.
I replaced the CAT5 I was using between the router and the modem (I was using the one that came with the modem) with a "known good" cable. { JENNY TOLD ME THAT "The TECH SPEC I TALK TOO WERE as she said in so many words DUMB and I was SMART enough to figure this out on my own. Looked under the SUPPORT, START HERE- type WRT54GS COMMUNITY/Top FORMS, then "Connects, but no connection using router" then I found this: Re: Connects, but no connection using router Options Options hermanzkeRegular visitorPosts: 1Registered: 04-23-2008hermanzkeMessage 17 of 125Viewed 11,408 timesI FINALLY FOUND A SOLUTION.I have had continual problems much like all of you, and spent countless hours on the phone with Linksys.doing all of the things they are telling all of you. So, I replace the Linksys Cord with a "SPARE" one I had. I DON"T WANT CONSUMERS BEING TAKING ADVANTAGE OF BECAUSE OF CORPORATIONS LOOP HOLES.3 STARS IS FAIR. to pick up a new router when I decided to check the cable.
I told the TECH that I found the SOLUTION. SO I too bought a new cable and AMAZINGLY. BACK, which includes all parts" COULD THIS BE A SHAME< CONSPIRACY > TO SAVE ON RECALL OR PROFIT.ALSO I KEPT the BOX, CD, PAPERS and RECEIPT WHICH IS A MUST. A Representative named Ruth at the time I did not write down her ID# but it was 5 digits. HAHA and THREE EMPLOYEES SAID TO ME IT"S ONLY a $2 CABLE but GOOGLE IT about $5 SO WHY SHOULD I BE OUT $5 FOR THEIR CHEAP QUALITY CABLE.
THEY ARE JUST DOING THEIR JOB EVEN IF IT MAYBE BORDERLINE UN_ETHICAL BUT ARE PROFESSIONAL AND VERY VERY CONCERTED WITH PUTTING UP WITH MY RANTS. Every thing would be shibby. So, I said no. And WALLAH I had Internet Connection. I SPIN HER LIKE A WASHER MACHINE GONE WILD.
BUT.NEVER REFUND/REPLACE the CORD. The only recourse was to reset the modem and router. Everything is working. He SOUNDED as if he had NO Idea that my FINDING could be the CAUSE/ISSUE but the TECH was Professional and STEP by STEP we Configured the SETTINGS.Then at FIRST, I wanted a REPLACEMENT Ethernet Cord if in deed as THE TECH SUPERVISOR APPROVED an replacement, I thought it would be COVERED. Except after 3hrs, 4 different Tech Support Levels, no luck with any connection/ configuration, settings, you name it. I did the cd install, to no avail.
They were nice, had great communication and were knowledgeable. BUT I RAN HER LIKE Maurice Greene. Has anyone replaced the CAT5 cable between the router and the modem. I then called Tech Support.
SO, the CORD is NOT Covered as in their "LIMITED WARRANTY" I was say at least DISAPPOINTED in the COMPANY'S POLICY (Linksys) AND I FRIED HER like a "BURNT STAKE" until she TRANSFER me to Jenny ID# 11343. Then it dawned on me to ask Jenny "HAS ANYONE ELSE CALLED AND ISSUE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS ISSUE" same/similar as mine. Kudos. NOW, I was a HOT FIRER CRACKER with her also because again I SPENT total 4 hours including the SECURE NETWORK SETTINGS because I was TOLD NOT to RE-INSTALL USING THE DISK. IS MAKING/TELLING THE SUPPORT NOT TO REVEAL THIS AND I FELT LIKE I'm A BUG UNDER THE COMPANY'S GIANT BOOT."L" TALKED/VAGUELY OR MOSTLY "SIR, I DON"T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU"RE SAYING." ONLY THING SHE WOULD/COULD DO WAS "SEND AND INVESTIGATION."" I ASK HER WHAT DOES THAT INVOLVED> SHE SAID LITTLE TO NOTHING about the PROCESS> ONLY THAT SHE WOULD CALL ME BACK IF/WHEN SHE FOUND OUT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT "MY" ISSUE and only gave me an email rma@linksys which i know will have no effect so why bother. It is what I believe to be a FAULTY/DEFECT in the provided Ethernet Cord. I have a similar setup to sinnerforgivn (same router, same modem, different provider).
I STILL LOVE THE PRODUCT "IF IT CONTINUES TO WORK" I HAVE NO ILL WILL TOWARDS THE EMPLOYEES. at first she DENIED it. SHE CALLED HERSELF "L" ID# 29350. AND THE CORP. My problems seem to have vanished. AND THE ONLY THING SHE SAID SHE COULD DO FOR ME WAS "FILE" "INVESTIGATE" "REPORT" "PASS THE ISSUE TO HER SUPERVISOR/DEPART HEAD".
I WAS A HOT POTATO, BUT AS IN THE MOVIE "MAYBE SHE SIGNED A CONTRACT.SOMETHING that KEPT HER/SUPPORT/CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM REVELING THIS SIMPLE FIX. When I first set things up all was kosher. After some "high" traffic, my connection would die and I'd have to reset it all again. I even went out a bought a new router, only to continue having problems.I finally followed the advice of WAMason which is message #12 that recommended getting a new CAT 5 cable.
Until she SLIPPED UP and said she "herself" had "many" ETHERNET CORD COMPLAINTS. Something FISHY is going on here. SO SHE I AM ASSUMING TO REALIZED HER ERROR AND TRANSFER ME TO HER SUPERVISOR. Connection worked fine and I didn't have any troubles. ALSO, I ASK THE SAME QUESTIONS BUT SHE WAS SMART AND KEPT TO HER GUNNS WHATEVER ROUNDS THEY HOLD.WELL THIS IS GETTING TOO LONG> THEIR IS A LOT MORE THAT HAPPENED BUT by 7 HOURS MY MEMORY IS WEAK AND MAY NOT BE AS ACCURATE SINCE IT HAS BEEN 6 Hours LATER.SUMMERY. I was about to head out to the local Walmart (it was 2AM at the time, what else is open). THE COMPANY Linksys needs to do more "SPREAD THE BUTTER/ KNOWLEDGE TO THEIR DEPARTMENTS.
IT HIT ME LIKE A TON OF BRICKS. L GAVE NO OTHER PHONE NUMBERS OR NAMES NOTHING THAT I COULD "INVESTIGATE" FURTHER. So, I gave COSTUMER SUPPORT their Unmarked "NETWORK CABLE" Serial Number to INFORM the Company "at least mine" is/went BAD. WHICH MOST LIKELY WILL CHANGE. At first I sniffed my external connection because I thought somone was DOSing me. Called the CONSUMER SALES DEPT at 1-800-546-5797. Here is what he said and found. Still, I called TECH SUPPORT to INSTALL a Secure NETWORK SETTING because it was an UNSECURED NETWORK.
And then went to LINKSYS website. THIS WAS MY EXPERIENCE. Two months after purchase, The ROUTER just suddenly had no connection to the internet on my computer. {3522-08000001R} MY MIND FRAME CHANGED FROM JUST GETTING A REPLACEMENT TO "ADVOCACY" for those/CONSUMER who "RETURNED" and paid to SHIP a "DEFECTIVE ROUTER.
I've been having the same problem that most of you are experiencing here. AFTER THINKING A BIT AND A LITTLE ROUGH TALK, I FOUND OUT that a CONSUMER/ SMARTER THAN "Tech's" and ME. Viola. I bought this model at my local Walmart for $40. STATED "ONLY THE ENTIRE UNIT IS COVERED" not individual parts. I called the Customer Support, and they were also professional but to receive a replacement I must pay for the Shipping Cost or Charge my Credit Card of the original price until they RECEIVE the DEFECTIVE WRT54GS.
for about 15 minutes. I RECEIVED a NEW CASE # starts the same 090221-00X- XXX. Hmmmm. Alas, no incoming traffic. This maybe an Issue that Costumers might have. I did the whole rigamaro of upgrading the firmware on the router and on the modem but still the same problem.
}THAT hermanzke FIGURED IT OUT (this and many others have complained about on this posting) THE ISSUE, again in my very limited research.
